Should the forum change to a newer server and start from scratch again?

No, I reckon it's fine as it is, and don't want to have to re-register - again

I guess I still don't understand why we can't just have the entire site restored on another server. The database can be backed up and the files can be downloaded and uploaded again. That is, of course, if you have the right software... Confused

Please be aware that I'm in the process of testing moving and restoring the current database to a test server to see if I can physically move the database without having to start from scratch again. I think that I'm pretty sure there WILL be another server change, but the question will be whether or not we'll have to start from scratch again or not...

This has been terrible. For days now, it's been nothing but constant "The server is taking too long to respond."

It's getting ridiculous, and the fact that there's a high probability of a move = yes.

The question is, are we going to migrate to a different server and discover that it has all the issues which plagued this one, and more?

We tend to look back on the first forum server as the "Golden Days" of SCU, when we had about 400 active members out of around 1,000, hardly any connection issues, much more restricted sig/avatar limits, and certainly fewer spam topics/posts. Yet it was decided to up and move. Why? Because the old server had a severe limitation in either bandwidth or capacity (can't remember which). So Mills chose to expand - already he had his eye on the future and saw what most people didn't, that the forum must expand if it is to survive.

So we ended up here, on a much, much bigger server, but at the cost of a connection that's about as reliable as a random number generator. Are we going to move and find out that the new server has its own set of problems? Perhaps it'll lack options and end up being about as interesting as a dial tone. Maybe it'll only let us browse topics every Tuesday, Friday, and Groundhog's Day. It might be bugged and force advertisements or spyware on us. It's worth finding out exactly what we're jumping into, and we won't know for sure until we've moved.

I'm all for moving since this server is unbearable when it doesn't want to run. Still, we should at least keep it a while as a backup in case we jump out of the frying pan and into the fire.

I'm begining to agree with the rest of you guys. Lately the server has been lagging like crap. A fix or move is in order.

Well, the server I would be moving to is the same company that the zeromission.co.uk domain name sits on (servage.net) as they appear to be much more reliable (certainly where smaller files are concerned) than Globat's see-saw based performance. There'd be no limitations to use, and there'd be no ads from the server hosts as it would be a hosting package paid up for a year in advance.

Oh and the last server (the original one) WAS plagued with the lovely "phpBB error. Unable to connect to the database" type error (which became more and more frequent). Plus, it was sitting on a 100meg mySQL database, which is just useless for a community as large and as expanding as SCU's.

WHEN the move happens, it'll be done so after extensive tests have been carried out to prevent as little disruption as possible to the community and their previous posts. So I'm not just going to up-sticks just like that...

if you're going to change servers you might consider changing forum software as well, i heard smf is pretty good

less security releases, less releases, a package manager to easily install hotfixes and mods, clean and documented code,

powerful, organized templates and faster and very optimized

You seem to forget that Andy is a simple, straightforward, and above all Irish* man who wants a familiar interface that he knows his way around, along with the reassurance on using well-known software which he knows he can get help pretty much anywhere for. Switching from PhpBB to this "SMF" is a lot like switching from Norton to "Panda Titanium Antivirus", IMO...

I wouldn't suggest a forum software change for SCU... IPB and vBulliten are the only other forum softwares that I know are good. They both cost money though ($70/year for IPB). phpBB does have the stupid security problems though.

As for a server move, I'm going to be writing some instructions for Millz on how to do it without having to start everything over. Wink

If you still go troubles Andrew, I wouldn't mind helping you a hand with the transfer Wink

Your instructions were good, but I don't know what to do once I've re-uploaded all the SQL files. I tested a few files, but not much as a few of them were 35megs+ big! Shocked

Once I have them up in the format you gave me (under 8megs each), then what? I have no idea how to link the backup TO the new forum on the other server so it reads it like it was always there...

Open config.php and change the old dataase info with the new database info, maybe that will work. I'm not so familiar with phpbb2...
Take a backup of config.php first!

Am I the only person who has never gotten one of those errors... ever? <_<

The server has been ace for me, but if other people are having problems I guess we should move.
